Trek is launching the Borrego+, a fat-tyre electric bike aimed as much at off-road riding as at everyday journeys. The rear hub motor puts out 750 W and 90 Nm, paired with a removable 720 Wh battery claimed to deliver 97 kilometres of range. Two versions exist in the United States: the standard Borrego+, capped at 20 mph with pedal assist and a throttle, and the Borrego+ S, which reaches 28 mph but is not sold in California. With the Borrego+, Trek is taking on the fat-tyre electric bike segment head-on, a category driven in the United States by brands such as Rad Power Bikes and Aventon. The recipe: an off-road build, a thumb throttle, and a price that stays at the entry level of the brand’s line-up.
The Borrego+, a motor built for torque rather than speed
The Borrego+ carries a 750 W rear hub motor delivering 90 Nm of torque, paired with a removable 720 Wh battery. Trek claims up to 97 kilometres of range, with the battery lockable and top-ejecting to make charging easier without taking the bike apart. Two configurations exist: the standard Borrego+, a Class 2 model limited to 20 mph with pedal assist and a throttle, and the Borrego+ S, a Class 3 variant that reaches 28 mph — but which Trek does not sell in California, where local regulations rule it out.
Fat tyres built for everyday riding as much as adventure
The bike rolls on 4-inch-wide tyres, paired with an 80 mm suspension fork to soak up rough ground. Trek claims a payload capacity of 200 kg, carried by a reinforced rear rack compatible with the MIK mounting system. Mudguards, a skid plate, a brake light and daytime-visible indicators round out the kit — a list aimed as much at the commute as at rides off the beaten track.
The Trek Central app lends a hand
The Borrego+ connects to the Trek Central app, which adds a digital lock, battery status alerts, customisable ride modes and a remaining-range estimate. Nothing new in principle, but the lock function may prove useful on a bike designed to be ridden in town as well as out in the wild.
That said, this launch concerns only the American market for now: at $2,499 and available from 16 July, the Borrego+ has no announced date or price in Europe.
