From Friday 12 to Sunday 14 June, the Lyon metropolitan area hosted the Vélorution universelle 2026, a cycling gathering that moves to a different city every year. On the programme: urban rides, workshops, picnics and a large festive parade at parc Blandan. Behind the good-natured atmosphere lies an openly stated demand: give cycling more room in public space. The principle, inherited from the American Critical Mass rides, comes down to one simple idea — ride in numbers to ride more safely.
For three days, cyclists took turns on the streets of Lyon and its metropolitan area, from parc de la Commune-de-Paris in Villeurbanne to the lakes of Miribel-Jonage. From 12 to 14 June, the area played host to the Vélorution universelle, a gathering that parks its wheels in a different French city each year. The name says it all: « vélorution », a blend of vélo (bike) and révolution.
Three days of cycling, from Villeurbanne to Miribel-Jonage
It all began on Friday evening at parc de la Commune-de-Paris in Villeurbanne, with a first urban ride to kick off the weekend. The bulk of the event took place on the Saturday. At dawn, a ride dubbed the « sunrise ride » took the earliest risers out to watch the sun come up; the morning continued at the friche Lamartine, in the 7th arrondissement, around a bike-decorating workshop and a shared breakfast.
In the afternoon, parc Blandan hosted the highlight: a festive procession combining music, entertainment and decorated vehicles. It is this big bike parade that traditionally draws the biggest crowd. The evening carried on in Vaulx-en-Velin, with concerts at a community venue.
Sunday struck a family tone with a « children’s vélorution » setting off from place Bahadourian, in the 3rd arrondissement, to parc de la Feyssine, where a collective picnic and various activities were waiting. The weekend closed with a gathering at parc de Miribel-Jonage.
Festive, and firmly activist
The organisers present the Vélorution as an event that is « both festive and activist ». The celebration is plain to see: decorated bikes, music, shared picnics. The demand makes no secret of itself either — promote cycling as a way of getting around and call for a different sharing of public space, which today is largely cut to the car’s measure.
The event is by no means exclusive to Lyon. The Vélorution universelle is held every year in a different French city, driven by local collectives. The movement itself reaches beyond borders: internationally, « vélorution » stands for the idea of encouraging everyone to give up polluting transport for their everyday journeys.
Riding in numbers to ride safely
The group procession was not invented in Lyon. It descends from Critical Mass, the gatherings born in San Francisco in 1992, where cyclists take to the street together, in numbers, on the last Friday of the month. The founding idea comes down to a single formula: there is safety in numbers.
That is precisely what the Vélorution organisers are claiming. By riding as a group, cyclists take up the carriageway and make themselves visible, in a setting where riders often feel vulnerable, alone in the middle of traffic.
« A compact and good-natured moving mass », to « feel free and safe on a bike in the streets ».
