An unprecedented collaboration for stronger urban mobility
EIT Urban Mobility, Factual, Fluctuo and Social Tech Projects are joining forces to put to the test an innovative technology designed to optimise cycling infrastructure. Deployed in Barcelona and Sarajevo, this pilot project covers more than 100 km of cycle networks.
This project, named VeloVision, is supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Ultimately, the cities involved will have a precise analysis of their cycle lanes, concrete recommendations for improving them and indicators to steer priority projects.

Cutting-edge technology for in-depth analysis
The computer vision technology developed by Social Tech Projects, mounted on bikes, makes it possible to scan infrastructure in detail. It collects data on road surface quality, potential hazards and safety issues, as well as air quality.
This information is then scrutinised using Factual’s Lane Patrol assessment method. The results offer clear insights to boost the quality of infrastructure and encourage cycling.
A dashboard to better understand and act
Fluctuo steps in by cross-referencing this data with other open sources, such as City Dive’s shared mobility flows. The VeloVision dashboard, available on City Dive, allows cities to analyse more than 50 key indicators and to draw on advice powered by artificial intelligence.
Challenges and outlook
By building on this technology, EIT Urban Mobility makes a point of avoiding the fragmentation of urban mobility solutions. It encourages collaboration between cities, industry and research to overcome the sector’s most pressing challenges.
The success of this project could pave the way for other European cities looking to maximise the impact of their cycling infrastructure for sustainable, safe mobility.
