On a downhill bike, the rear light is always the first casualty: mounted on the seatpost, it vanishes the moment you drop the saddle to tackle a descent. Supernova has turned the problem on its head and put the light where nobody expected it — inside the head of the dropper post itself.
A light housed in the post head
The Superdropper is the result of a collaboration between Supernova, the German lighting brand, and Gabriel, one of the major suspension component manufacturers. The light used is a TL3 MINI, built directly into the upper section of the post, at seat clamp level. The result: the light stays visible whatever the saddle height, including with the saddle dropped on a descent.
A version with a brake-light function, compliant with Germany’s StVZO road traffic regulations, is also planned. The Eurobike Award jury praised its “clean” integration and a genuine safety gain.
The real headache
The real headache was not the light, but the cable. Routing a power supply through a dropper post, which slides constantly and houses a damper cartridge, had never been solved cleanly. Supernova says it has managed it thanks to a redesigned suspension assembly and very flexible cable routing, able to absorb the movements of the post.
E-bikes only
The trade-off of this integration: the Superdropper does not power itself. The light is wired to the e-bike’s battery through a 12-volt circuit, and switches on with the bike’s light button. No battery to recharge, but no post for a non-assisted bike either.
Designed for steep terrain, it offers up to 200 mm of travel and a Matchmaker or Shimano i-Spec compatible lever. Supernova covers the lighting side with a five-year warranty. The post is announced at 319 euros on the brand’s own shop; distribution details outside Germany have yet to be confirmed. The rest of the spec sheet can be found on the official Supernova website.
