Chinese manufacturer T&D has won a gold Eurobike Award 2026 for its “semi-solid” battery designed for electric bikes. Its promise: an energy density of 250 to 350 Wh per kilo, against 150 to 250 Wh/kg for current lithium-ion batteries. In plain terms, more range for the same weight, or lighter batteries for the same range, with better heat resistance. No price and no mass-production date have been announced.

830 watt-hours in 3.2 kilos. That is the argument T&D laid on the table in Frankfurt, and it earned the company one of the show’s highest honours. For context: an electric bike battery of that capacity commonly weighs more than four kilos today.

The figure that matters is energy density: the amount of energy stored per kilo of battery. T&D claims 250 to 350 Wh/kg, whereas the lithium-ion used in electric bikes tends to top out between 150 and 250 Wh/kg. The gap translates directly into weight and range.

The brand also claims a lifespan of five to seven years, at least 1,500 charge cycles with around 70% of capacity retained at the end, and operation from −20 to +50 °C. Flattering figures, still to be confirmed in real-world use.

Neither fully liquid nor fully solid

A conventional lithium-ion battery bathes its electrodes in a flammable liquid electrolyte. The “all-solid-state” battery, promised for years, replaces that liquid with a solid material — but remains hard to mass-produce. Semi-solid technology is the intermediate step: a partly gelled electrolyte, more thermally stable than the liquid, but easier to manufacture than all-solid-state.

That is the balance the Eurobike Award jury rewarded: real progress in safety and density, without waiting for a technological breakthrough that never quite arrives.

A promise rewarded, not yet a product on the shelf

The hardest part remains: going from an award-winning stand to a battery you bolt under a frame. T&D has announced neither a price, nor a mass-production schedule, nor a partnership with a bike manufacturer. The semi-solid cell has stayed at the promise stage more than once; this time, it leaves Frankfurt with a medal. One to watch on the assemblers’ side.
