IN BRIEF

Specialized has closed the bike shop at Trail House in Santa Rosa, California: The Press Democrat reports that on Monday 19 October, a crew had already removed the shop’s inventory, tools and machinery. The adjoining cafe remains open, and the shop’s employees have been taken on at the two other Specialized stores in the city. The brand had bought the shop in March 2022. Rick Vosper, former global marketing director at Specialized, counts 48 of the brand’s stores in the United States in October, down from 59 in June.

At Trail House in Santa Rosa, people had been able to buy a bike and sample craft beers since 13 December 2016. The Trail House Cafe remains open, but Specialized, which has owned the shop since 2022, has emptied the store. The Press Democrat describes an abrupt closure that caught the city’s cyclists off guard.

A shop emptied in a single morning

Crystal Ramirez, co-owner of the Trail House Cafe, told the newspaper that a crew removed all the inventory, tools and machinery from the Montgomery Drive shop on Monday 19 October. Shane Bresnyan, who managed the shop until that Monday, said in a message that the retail business was closing, but that its employees had been taken on at the two other Specialized stores in Santa Rosa.

Those two shops, NorCal Bike Sport and Bike Peddler, were bought by Specialized in the same wave of acquisitions as Trail House, in March 2022.

Specialized shrinks its store network in the United States

Rick Vosper, former global marketing director at Specialized, draws on the TheBikeShopList.com service: the brand had 59 stores in the United States in June. Including Trail House, he counts 48 in October, meaning 19 % of the shops have closed.

The Press Democrat places this closure within a broader trend. Having bought up many local store chains in the wake of the pandemic, when demand for bikes soared, Specialized and other large companies are now closing them, as tariffs have pushed prices up and both demand and shop footfall have fallen.

Local cyclists write to Mike Sinyard

The Redwood Trails Alliance, a local trails association, describes the shop as “a gathering place and a home for countless good times, conversations, rides, events, and trail projects”. Its trail committee had met there only the week before. The association is encouraging those affected by the closure to write to Mike Sinyard, Specialized’s founder who recently returned as CEO, “to let him know what Trail House has meant to Santa Rosa and the North Bay”.

Tom Boss, the association’s executive director, hopes the cafe will survive “as a gathering spot”, but believes it will be difficult to “have the same vibe”. The Press Democrat writes that Mike Sinyard, contacted by email, had not responded by Friday 23 October.
