The Wanderer is Viral’s first drop-bar bike, or more precisely, as bikepacking.com puts it, a drop-bar mountain bike. Viral Bikes, which bikepacking.com describes as launched in 2016 by Steve Domahidy, now offers it with 32-inch wheels.

The Viral Wanderer 32 shifts gears at the bottom bracket

On the Wanderer, the gears are housed at the bottom bracket, in an electronically controlled Pinion C1.12i Smart.Shift gearbox offering a 600% range. Drive goes through a Gates CDX Carbon Drive belt. Sliding dropouts and a splittable frame make it easy to fit and tension, Viral says.

Braking and controls are handled by TRP, with the Hywire/Hylex system and 180 mm rotors front and rear. The handlebar is a Ritchey Beacon WCS with flared drops.

A titanium frame built for touring

The frame is 3/2.5 triple-butted titanium, with mounts for mudguards, racks, bags and three bottle cages. Viral announces 5.25 lb for a size M frame. On geometry, bikepacking.com notes a 67.5° head angle, 475 mm chainstays and a 108 mm bottom bracket drop.

The 32-inch version is offered only in sizes V4 and V5, i.e. L and XL. Bikepacking.com states that Viral is keeping the 29-inch version in both sizes, and reports that the brand expects “serious” bikepackers to hesitate over a 32-inch wheel, given the lack of tyre choice out in the field. It rolls on Industry Nine Solix Whisp wheels and comes with a choice of an ENVE Mountain carbon fork or an 80 mm Fox 34 SL suspension fork.
