IN BRIEF

Magura is launching the Gustav Ultra, a brake lever for its Gustav Pro and Gustav Elite MTB brakes. It offers three independent adjustments: reach, bite point and braking power. Depending on the setting, the brand claims up to 10 % more power than with the Gustav Pro lever. Machined from forged aluminium, it weighs 48 g and costs €84.90 per lever. Danny MacAskill was involved in its development.

The official product page presents the Magura Gustav Ultra as a lever compatible with Gustav Elite and Gustav Pro brakes. Its tip is shaped for one-finger use.

Reach Adjust sets the reach. Thanks to the shape of the tip, the lever can sit closer to the handlebar than on the Pro and Elite versions.

Bite Point Adjust sets the piston preload — in other words, the bite point — across 4 distinct clicks. The range covers up to 25 % of the lever travel.

Finally, Power Adjust acts on the braking power itself, with a full range of 15 % and preset clicks. Depending on the setting chosen, Magura claims up to 10 % more power than the Gustav Pro lever. All three are adjusted with a 3 mm Allen key.

Developed with Danny MacAskill

Danny MacAskill contributed to the lever’s development with his feedback. He describes his starting set-up: “Most of the time, I start with a ‘2/3 power’ and ‘half bite point’ setting.” For him, the bite point adjustment makes it possible to fine-tune the brake even more precisely to different riding situations.

The lever is made from forged aluminium, then CNC-machined, with an anodised polished silver finish. It weighs 48 g, 4 g more than the Pro lever. Magura lists it at €84.90 each, as a recommended retail price.

For the launch, the brand is also offering a limited-edition kit that comes with a free metal lunch box. The offer is limited to Europe and available while stocks last.
