Velo Orange Gravel Crankarms: square-taper cranks for gravel, at 145 dollars

IN BRIEF

Velo-Orange has put its Gravel Crankarms on sale, a set of JIS square-taper cranks designed for gravel. Their five-arm spider takes an outer chainring on a 110 mm BCD and an inner chainring on a 74 mm BCD, for a single or double chainring setup. They come in black or silver, from 160 to 175 mm, at 145 dollars a pair in the United States. The brand pairs them with narrow-wide chainrings from 38 to 44 teeth for single-chainring use, and inner chainrings from 24 to 30 teeth.

Velo-Orange presents these cranks as classic style meeting modern gravel. Choosing a square-taper axle means the chainline can be adjusted through the length of the bottom bracket axle, without changing cranks.

Gravel cranks, sold à la carte

The official product page states that these cranks are sold on their own, without chainrings or bottom bracket, so that riders can build their own setup. On 30 October, Velo-Orange’s online shop, viewed from France, only showed its prices in dollars. The finish is polished and smooth, with discreetly engraved VO logos. The bottom bracket is chosen according to the desired chainline: 50 mm with a 68 x 118 mm axle, 44 mm with a 68 x 107 mm axle and 48 mm with a 73 x 113 mm axle.

Single or double chainring, from 24 to 46 teeth

For single-chainring use, the narrow-wide chainrings from 38 to 44 teeth bolt directly into the outer position. They sell for 62 dollars, in black or silver, and are compatible with 8- to 12-speed drivetrains. They also fit many other cranksets with a 110 mm BCD, the brand points out.

For a double, Velo-Orange pairs its 40- to 46-tooth outer chainrings on a 110 mm BCD with 24- to 30-tooth inner chainrings on a 74 mm BCD, sold for 35 dollars. The brand speaks of true “sub-compact” gearing. The bolts are sold separately: 15 dollars for the outer ring, 12 dollars for the inner ring.
