Magura Race Pro: brand claims its most powerful brake yet, €699.90 a pair

Magura puts numbers on its new Race Pro brake: 16% more braking force than a Gustav Pro, 310 g claimed and €699.90 a pair, available from mid-October.

Magura Race Pro: brand claims its most powerful brake yet, €699.90 a pair

IN BRIEF

Magura presents the Race Pro as “the most powerful and precise brake we’ve ever built” — the wording is the brand’s, not that of an independent test bench. The German manufacturer puts numbers on its claim: approximately 16% more braking force than a Gustav Pro, measured on a test bench in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 4210 standard with a hand force of 100 newtons, and 20% more system stiffness than an MT7. The official spec sheet lists 310 g with a one-metre hose, a forged aluminium caliper finished by CNC machining and four 19 mm pistons. According to the French product page, the price is €699.90 a pair, and the first small quantities are expected in Europe and North America from mid-October.

There is an honest way to announce a very powerful brake: publish the method along with the number. Magura does exactly that for its Race Pro, and that is what makes this launch readable — the two percentages the brand puts forward come with their measurement protocol in a footnote.

What Magura measures behind its 16%

The first figure is a comparison with the Gustav Pro, and the official spec sheet gives the exact conditions: “In dry braking conditions, with a hand force of 100 N, the RACE PRO generates approximately 16% more braking force than a GUSTAV PRO with the same brake pads and rotor diameter.” Same pads, same rotor diameter, 100 newtons applied at the lever, on a test bench and in accordance with the DIN EN ISO 4210 standard. This is a comparative measurement, not a promise about feel.

The second figure, the 20% stiffness gain, is not a comparison with the Gustav Pro but with the MT7, and it is not measured on a test bench: Magura states that it refers to “a calculation of brake lever compliance compared to the MT7”, fed by FEM analyses of caliper stiffness and by the reduced hydraulic system pressure of the Race Pro. A calculation, then, and the brand says so.

A Magura Race Pro machined entirely from aluminium

The spec sheet describes a forged aluminium caliper finished by CNC machining, with four pistons, and a radial-piston master cylinder housed in a precisely machined aluminium body. The stiffness-to-weight ratio is presented as the point of all that machining: the caliper is “Larger and stiffer than the MT7 caliper body”, yet thanks to the machining “it weighs in at almost the same”. The official spec sheet lists 310 g with a one-metre hose.

Inside, the low-pressure logic of the Gustav Pro returns: a 12 mm master cylinder and four 19 mm caliper pistons, which Magura presents as a way of lowering the hydraulic pressure level. The lever pivot turns on a ball bearing, and the pads are the MDP 13 already seen on the Gustav brakes, available in three compounds.

€699.90 a pair, and two mounting details

Two in-house systems come with this brake, and for anyone who builds up their own bike they matter as much as the percentages. SHIFTMIX, according to Magura’s product page, lets you mount “a dropper post remote or shifter directly to the brake”. EASY LINK, for its part, is presented as “Plug’n Play” for the brake hose, with the option of disconnecting the hose from the brake master at any time and without special tools.

The French price appears on the official product page: €699.90 a pair, with a five-year leak-proof guarantee. As for availability, the brand stays cautious and puts it like this: “First small quantities available in europe & north america from mid october.” Small quantities, then — the wording is Magura’s, and it is worth keeping in mind before counting on this brake for the end of the season.
