IN BRIEF
State Bicycle Co. is turning its 4130 Trail steel hardtail mountain bike into a build-your-own platform. Until now supplied with a 130 mm RockShox suspension fork, it can now also be ordered with a rigid steel fork, a rigid carbon fork, or no fork at all. Being shorter, the rigid forks lower the front end and turn it into an all-terrain touring bike. The brand sets its prices in dollars: the mechanical build ranges from $1,099.99 without a fork to $1,499.99 with the suspension fork. Viewed from France on 6 November, its online shop displayed converted prices from €997.95 without a fork to €1,359.95 with the suspension fork, and it ships outside the United States.

State sums up the change to the 4130 Trail in a phrase: “four bikes in one”. The fork you choose decides the terrain.
A 4130 Trail that comes as four bikes
The frame is 4130 chromoly steel, with external cables, internal routing for a dropper post, three bottle cage mounts and Boost hubs. The geometry published by State, with a 65° head angle, corresponds to the build with the RockShox Psylo Silver RC suspension fork.
The change is up front. The suspension fork measures 550 mm from axle to crown, against 492 mm for the rigid steel fork and 495 mm for the rigid carbon one. By lowering the front end, the rigid forks steepen the head angle, lower the bottom bracket and shorten the wheelbase. Trail drops from 125 mm to around 100 mm. State puts it simply: with a rigid fork, the 4130 Trail becomes an ATB (all-terrain bike).

Steel for loading up, carbon for saving weight
The two rigid forks play different roles. The steel one weighs 1,814 g and is covered in mounts: five per leg, plus rack and mudguard mounts. The carbon one weighs 563 g, keeps three mounts per leg and rack mounts, and clears a 32-inch wheel with a 2.4 tyre for a mullet build. With it, the brand’s product page states, the 4130 Trail goes from 32 to 28 pounds.
Both come with an uncut 300 mm steerer and a 15 x 110 mm thru-axle. The same frame is also available with SRAM Eagle Transmission, with a 10-52 cassette, and all four fork options are offered on it.
From $1,099.99 to $1,499.99
On State’s online shop, where prices are set in dollars, the mechanical build costs $1,499.99 with the suspension fork. The carbon fork brings it down by $100, to $1,399.99, and the steel fork by $300, to $1,199.99. Without a fork, for those who already have their own, it costs $1,099.99. From France, on 6 November, the shop displayed these builds at €997.95 to €1,359.95, converted prices. State ships outside the United States, with duties and taxes paid at checkout.
