The Gobao drive system is winning over a growing number of brands with its customisable, high-performance solutions for electric bikes. Here's why.

Gobao: the drive system winning over more and more brands

IN BRIEF

Gobao, a low-profile Chinese motor maker, is betting on an unusual model: its motors are sold white-label — bike brands fit them, rename them and customise the assistance as they see fit. The P100 peaks at 100 Nm and 750 W of peak power; the P120 pushes to 110 Nm and 850 W. On charging: a 6 A charger is included, and a 704 Wh battery is full in around four hours.

A motor designed to disappear behind the brand

Gobao is not trying to make a name for itself alongside Bosch or Shimano in buyers’ minds. Its model is a different one: the company positions itself as a technical partner, supplying a platform that bike makers can adopt, adapt and sell under their own name. Software, assistance profiles, control interface — each brand configures the riding experience its own way.

This approach has a direct consequence for the buyer: unlike a Bosch system, where behaviour stays largely the same from one bike to the next, two bikes fitted with a Gobao motor can ride very differently. The bike as a whole therefore counts for more than the motor maker’s name alone.

High power, fast charging

On the technical side, Gobao offers two mid-drive units. The P100 delivers up to 100 Nm of torque and 750 W of peak power for 2.8 kg. The P120 climbs to 110 Nm (120 Nm in boost mode) and 850 W. Both sit in the Full Power segment — on a par with the Bosch Performance Line CX Gen 5, which tops out at 800 W.

On the storage side, three battery capacities are available: 600, 704 or 804 Wh. The 6 A charger supplied as standard stands clearly apart from rivals, which are often limited to 2 or 4 A: according to the manufacturer, the 704 Wh battery recharges fully in around four hours.
