IN BRIEF

Brompton put a special edition of its G Line on sale on 10 September, the larger-wheeled version of its folding bike, designed with Japanese outdoor clothing brand and wander. The bike gets a textured metallic grey paint finish, a matching Roller Rack and bright yellow anodised touches, along with an engraved logo. The collaboration goes beyond the bike: it also includes luggage — a backpack that clips onto the front of the frame, supplied with the bike, and a 3-litre pouch — as well as a capsule collection of clothing and accessories, including a windbreaker, windbreaker trousers, a T-shirt and a cap. Brompton’s French store lists the 8-speed bike at €3,570, the British store at £2,999.

There are collaborations that amount to a sticker, and there are those where two sets of expertise genuinely meet. Brompton has just launched one of the second kind with and wander, the Japanese technical outdoor clothing brand whose understated aesthetic spilled beyond the hiking trails long ago.

The basis for the project is the G Line, the larger-wheeled version Brompton intends for tracks and longer journeys. The official page sums up its appeal: this bike “combines the ride feel of a full-size bike with the iconic Brompton fold”.

The special edition is recognisable first of all by its paint. Brompton describes a “textured metallic grey paint finish with a colour matched Roller Rack and vibrant yellow anodised touchpoints”, the whole thing “Finished with a subtle etched Brompton x and wander logo”. The French page also details components specific to the edition — a “bespoke printed Superlight saddle, matching ergonomic grips and custom hinge clamp plates” — and reflective details: “reflective frame decals and a saddle charm”.

A backpack that clips onto the frame

This is where the collaboration makes sense, because this is and wander’s home ground. The collection, according to BikeBiz, comprises a special-edition G Line bike, luggage mounted on the bike and a capsule collection of technical clothing and accessories.

The backpack makes use of Brompton’s own front mounting system, one of the brand’s genuine practical strengths: “The Brompton x and wander Backpack clicks onto the front of the bike in seconds”, the French page writes, adding: “A special-edition Roller Rack adds extra carry space and makes moving the folded bike even easier.” The page states that this bag is included with the bike. To it is added a 3-litre rolltop pouch cut from ECOPAK EPLX400, a three-layer laminate in 100% recycled polyester that Brompton describes, for its backpack, as “durable, water-resistant”.

On the clothing side, the capsule includes a windbreaker, windbreaker trousers and a T-shirt, BikeBiz reports, as well as a cap.

Keita Ikeuchi, co-founder of and wander, explains his interest in the British brand to BikeBiz: “Brompton is a quality product handmade in the UK. It is a very functional product engineered to fold beautifully and ride amazingly.”

The bike, the luggage and the cap have been available since 10 September on Brompton’s website and at selected retailers. Brompton’s French store lists the 8-speed version at €3,570.00, announced as “In stock”; the British store lists it at £2,999.00.
