Strategic consolidation in urban cycling

Dutch group Swapfiets has taken a further step by acquiring Dance, a Berlin startup specialising in subscription electric bikes. The acquisition is part of a strategy to consolidate a European market in which the search for profitability is paramount.

Founded in 2020, Dance had already made a name for itself with its premium electric bikes in several European cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Paris and Vienna. With this acquisition, Swapfiets strengthens its position in the urban electric bike segment under the subscription model.

Two complementary visions

Dance will continue to operate under its own brand with Christian Springub at the head of the company. The deal allows Dance to draw on Swapfiets’ infrastructure, deployed across 45 cities with more than 280,000 bikes in circulation.

The acquisition does not mean the two brands will merge. On the contrary, Swapfiets and Dance will each continue to target different market segments. Swapfiets, initially known for its mechanical bikes, will strengthen its electric range while Dance will continue to focus on its premium image.

Economic stakes and outlook

The subscription bike sector has considerable logistical and financial challenges to overcome. Buying and maintaining fleets, along with running customer service, demands substantial investment. The logic behind Swapfiets’ acquisition is to pool those costs in order to achieve economies of scale.

The move also reflects a shift in how urban mobility is perceived. Subscription cycling is no longer reserved for occasional users, but is establishing itself as a genuine alternative to owning a personal vehicle, particularly in large cities where space and traffic are major issues.
