Tesla launches its first bike: a $225 balance bike for kids

IN BRIEF

Tesla is selling its very first bike: a balance bike for children, the Balance Bike for Kids, priced at $225 on its online store, where it sold out within hours. With no motor and no pedals, like any balance bike, it targets children aged 2 to 5 learning to balance by pushing along with their feet. The frame is made of lightweight magnesium, the saddle adjusts to five heights, and the brand’s “T” logo sits on the front of the frame. A surprise for the brand’s fans, who were rather hoping for an electric bike.

Tesla fans had been calling for years for an electric bike from the lightning-bolt brand. The answer, which landed this week on the carmaker’s online store, looks nothing like what they were expecting: a balance bike for children.

A balance bike, not an electric bike

The Balance Bike for Kids sticks to the classic balance bike principle: no motor, no pedals, no chain. The child moves forward by pushing along the ground with their feet, an exercise that helps them find their balance before moving on to a pedal bike. The frame is made of magnesium, a material chosen, according to Tesla, to stay as light as possible in the hands of a child aged 2 to 5.

A frame that grows with the child

The saddle adjusts to five different heights, enough to follow the child’s growth over several years rather than a single season. Tesla quotes a minimum inseam of 13.7 inches (34.8 cm) and a maximum load of 77 pounds (35 kg). The frame carries the Tesla wordmark on the side and the “T” logo on the front — the only touch that really ties this children’s bike to Elon Musk’s brand.

$225, and for now United States only

Priced at $225, the Balance Bike for Kids sits above entry-level balance bikes. Put on sale on Tesla’s online store, alongside the brand’s accessories and apparel, it sold out within hours: the product page has shown out of stock ever since, with no pre-order option, and the first deliveries are announced for the end of August. For now, the balance bike appears only on the American store, with no date and no price announced for other markets.
