Ornot started from a mountaineering jacket and adapted it to cycling: three-layer Pertex Shield fabric, a longer back, a PFC-free water-repellent finish. The Fog Eater is the brand’s lightweight rain jacket, alongside its Magic Shell, which is warmer and more closely fitted.

The fabric is a three-layer Pertex Shield with fully taped seams, rated at 20K waterproofing and 20K breathability. The water-repellent finish is PFC-free. The jacket weighs 280 g in size M and packs into its left hand pocket, which turns into a small stuff sack.

A hood that fits under the helmet

The hood is sized to be worn under a helmet, with three-point adjustment and a peak to keep the rain off. The official product page states that this design keeps the head dry in a real downpour and stops the hood from catching the wind, while still working as a normal hood once off the bike.

The cut is designed for riding: articulated sleeves, a longer back, yet roomy enough for the office or a stroll around town. The two-way zip opens from the bottom to reach jersey pockets or to vent without opening the chest. The mesh-lined hand pockets double as vents; there are also inside pockets, a zipped rear pocket, reflective details and a hem drawcord to stop the jacket flapping in the wind.

$325, in two colours

The Fog Eater costs $325 on Ornot’s online shop, in both the men’s and women’s versions. As of 16 October, a price in euros could not be established: Ornot’s shop served us its prices in dollars. Men can choose between Stone Green and Citron, women wear it in Citron. Ornot says it fits true to size, with room for a layer underneath, and recommends sizing up for a more relaxed fit.
