Riding on the road when it freezes is first and foremost a matter of keeping your feet warm. Northwave is updating its Celsius R Arctic GTX for the winter season, with a low-cut design and integrated gaiter, and a new closure system.
A Celsius R Arctic GTX sealed by a neoprene gaiter
The shoe has a low-cut upper extended by an integrated neoprene gaiter, flexible and insulating, which opens with a zip so the foot can slip in quickly. The membrane is a Gore-Tex Cirrus XT 4L, which Northwave describes as PFAS-free, waterproof and windproof while staying breathable on long rides.
The 200 g PrimaLoft Gold Eco insulation, made from recycled materials, sits in the toe box. The official product page lists an Arctic 4Layer insole.

A new SLW7 dual-dial closure
The closure moves to an SLW7 dual dial which, as the official product page describes it, allows faster fine adjustments, even while riding. Fully replaceable, it has been redesigned, and Northwave claims the system is 14% lighter and 16.6% more compact.
A nylon and carbon sole
The Morph sole, made of 94% nylon and 6% carbon fibre, has a Powershape profile that supports the arch, plus two vents. Its three cleat inserts offer 5 mm of adjustment. Tour reports a stiffness index of 10 claimed by Northwave, and a weight of 420 g per shoe, with no reference size given.
The Celsius R Arctic GTX is available in sizes 36 to 46, with half sizes from 39.5 to 45.5, in white or in black and dark grey, priced at €269.99 on the brand’s European product page.
