Suomi Tyres: DMACK plans RFID-chipped bicycle tyres from 2027

IN BRIEF

Finnish manufacturer DMACK Nordic wants to fit RFID chips into its Suomi Tyres bicycle tyres. The brand says the first tagged tyres will go into production in 2027 at its factory in Lieksa, Finland, before a step-by-step roll-out across the whole range. It explains that the chip will give each tyre a digital identity, linked to the origin of its natural rubber. The brand says it is already compliant with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will apply to companies from 30 December 2026.

Soon, a bicycle tyre will be able to tell where its rubber comes from. DMACK Nordic, which makes Suomi Tyres in Finland, aims to get there by placing a chip inside its tyres.

An RFID chip in every Suomi Tyres tyre

DMACK Nordic says it intends to become the first company in the bicycle tyre industry to integrate RFID tags into its products. BikeBiz reports that the first tagged Suomi Tyres are due to go into production in 2027 in Lieksa. The technology will arrive in stages, with the aim of eventually extending it to the brand’s entire bicycle tyre range.

Tyrepress sets out the principle: each chip assigns the tyre a unique digital identity and links it to supply-chain data on the origin of its natural rubber.

A step ahead of the EUDR

The backdrop is the EU Deforestation Regulation, the EUDR, which will apply to companies from 30 December 2026. The Finnish manufacturer states that it already meets its requirements.

“While many companies are still preparing for EUDR, DMACK is ready,” says Dick Cormack, CEO of DMACK Nordic, quoted by BikeBiz. He adds: “We have not waited for the regulation to take effect before acting.”

This is how he explains the choice of the chip:

“RFID technology is already transforming traceability in the truck tyre industry, but as far as we are aware, it has not yet been introduced into bicycle tyre production. Our ambition is to be the first bicycle tyre manufacturer to take this step.”

Lieksa, a bicycle tyre factory inside the EU

DMACK set up DMack Nordic Oy in 2023 by taking over the business of a long-established bicycle tyre factory in Lieksa, Finland. There it produces winter and summer Suomi Tyres, and presents itself as one of the few bicycle tyre manufacturers based in the European Union. The brand has set the goal of increasing its production fivefold to reach half a million bicycle tyres by 2030.
