IN BRIEF

On 20 October Garmin unveiled the Tacx Nēra, a smart trainer whose integrated movement modules let the bike move forwards, backwards and side to side. It simulates gradients of up to 20 %, handles sprints of up to 2,200 W and measures power and cadence to within 1 %. Wi-Fi is built in for racing on Zwift or ROUVY, and one version comes with the Zwift Cog and Click controllers. The French product page lists it at €999.99.

Garmin is building new movement modules into a Tacx smart trainer. The Tacx Nēra, presented on 20 October, integrates modules that produce forward, backward and sideways movement. The press release promises a more immersive, more comfortable and more realistic ride as a result.

The Tacx Nēra: movement built into the trainer

The movement is part of the trainer itself. road.cc notes that the Nēra does not give riders the option of doing without it. The name, Garmin told road.cc, is a reflection of the “new era within the Tacx lineup of indoor smart trainers”.

Beyond that, the Nēra simulates gradients of up to 20 % and supports sprints of up to 2,200 W. Garmin claims 1 % accuracy for power and cadence, in training as in racing.

Wi-Fi for virtual racing

The built-in Wi-Fi is meant to ensure a fast connection during virtual races on Zwift or ROUVY; the French product page also lists ANT+ and Bluetooth. The Nēra comes in two versions: one supplied with a preinstalled Shimano/SRAM 11-speed cassette and its freehub body, the other “Zwift Ready”, with the Zwift Cog and Click controllers preinstalled for seamless and silent virtual shifting.

Shimano/SRAM drivetrains from 9 to 11 speeds are compatible out of the box; a SRAM 12-speed drivetrain with an XDR freehub requires a special freehub body, the French product page specifies, giving a weight of 24.7 kg.

In the United States, the press release announces both versions as available now, at the same recommended price of $999.99. In France, the official product page lists €999.99.
