Some objects you know will divide opinion before you have even read the spec sheet: the Litespeed Rumpus is one of them. The American builder, which has been welding titanium for forty years, has just released this balance bike for children. It costs €883.95 and weighs three kilos.

The Litespeed Rumpus, a titanium balance bike welded in Chattanooga

The brand presents the Rumpus as a high-end titanium balance bike, handmade in Chattanooga, with no pedals. The frame uses tubing that Litespeed calls Superform, and the official page claims it is built by the same people as the Litespeed bikes that won Tour de France stages and World Championships.

The striking figure is the one on the scales: according to the official page, the Rumpus weighs 7 pounds, or 3.1 kg. On a balance bike, which the child picks up and carries themselves, that is a figure you feel directly.

The finish on offer pairs tan grips and saddle with a gold logo. On the chainstay, the page offers custom engraving of up to eighteen characters; a gold “FUTURE CHAMPION” illustrates the option in the official photos.

€883.95, made to order

On the Rumpus page, opened from France, Litespeed lists €883.95 and states that the bike is made to order, with a lead time of two to three weeks. According to the same page, the price includes a custom anodised head badge and a bespoke titanium display stand: it is the stand you see in the official photos, and the one that holds the balance bike upright.

According to the official page, the frame comes with a lifetime warranty, and Litespeed describes it as indestructible and intended for future generations. The brand takes the argument all the way: it writes that the titanium Rumpus is not made to be thrown away, and that it is ready to withstand multiple lifetimes of abuse before being handed down.

An heirloom more than a child’s bike

That is the whole gamble of this Rumpus, and Litespeed owns it: the pitch on the page talks neither about performance nor about learning to ride, but about passing things on. According to that same page, the bike is built to the same exacting standards as every Litespeed, by people who, the brand writes, know titanium better than anyone.

The fact remains that the official page is sparing on what a parent would really want to know: it gives neither a wheel size nor a seat height range — only that the seat is the only adjustment — and, on age, limits itself to saying that the bike is light enough for a two-year-old to lift. On a bike whose fit is measured in centimetres of inside leg, the absence of sizing figures remains the real grey area of the spec sheet.
