Chinese manufacturer Engwe, known for its folding and urban electric bikes sold direct online, is adding a second brand. MapFour targets more demanding buyers with recognised components — Shimano, Tektro, Michelin — where Engwe leans instead on tight pricing. The Roam, the first model showcased on the new brand’s official site, illustrates that shift: an all-road bike designed to ride far, with electric assistance.

The MapFour Roam banks on a 720 Wh battery to go the distance

The Roam packs a 100 Nm mid-drive motor paired with a removable 720 Wh battery built around Samsung 21700 cells with an integrated BMS. MapFour claims up to 150 kilometres of range in Eco mode, with a charging time of two hours thanks to a 42V 8A charger. Six assistance levels are on offer, from Eco to Turbo, by way of an Auto mode.

Carbon belt and suspension front and rear

Drive comes from a Michelin carbon belt (128 teeth) paired with a Shimano Nexus 5-speed hub, with no derailleur and no chain to oil. Up front, a Zoom aluminium fork offers 100 mm of travel; at the rear, a DNM shock with adjustable rebound soaks up a further 60 mm. Braking is handled by Tektro HD-R280 hydraulic calipers on 180 mm discs. As standard, the Roam comes with front and rear mudguards, a reinforced rack, a kickstand and a 30-lux front light carrying K certification.

RideGuard, the brand’s security play

The launch of the Roam comes with a system called RideGuard, presented by MapFour as permanent protection combining security, geolocation and connectivity. The bike is also controlled through a MapFour app, paired with a high-precision torque sensor and a 3.5-inch TFT display. To raise the Roam’s profile, the brand is running a prize draw open from 9 July to 4 August, restricted to European Union residents.

The Roam comes in two sizes — 20 inches for riders from 165 to 185 cm, 19 inches in the ST version for 160 to 180 cm — but its European price has not yet been announced, with the product page currently showing a provisional figure. Enough to judge, once the price is known, whether MapFour delivers on the promise of an electric bike more upmarket than the usual Engwe models.
