IN BRIEF

Decathlon sells the Veste pluie vélo visibilité jour 120 under its BTWIN brand, a unisex, fluorescent yellow cycling rain jacket listed at €29.99 on its website on 6 October. The brand describes it as waterproof and windproof, and states that it is certified as personal protective equipment for daytime visibility under the European standard EN 17353. Decathlon announces a coated fabric rated to a 5,000 mm water column and a jacket that packs into its chest pocket. For riding at night, the retailer sells another BTWIN jacket, the Visibilité nuit 540, at €69.99.

Its name reads like a spec sheet: Veste pluie vélo visibilité jour 120 (cycling rain jacket, daytime visibility). Decathlon sells it under its BTWIN brand, in a unisex, fluorescent yellow version, at €29.99 on its product page, and intends it for “commuting and leisure rides by bike”. The main selling point fits in three letters, PPE: the jacket is certified as personal protective equipment for daytime visibility, the brand states.

A European standard behind the fluorescent yellow

The FAQ on the product page gives the reference: Decathlon writes there that the jacket is “certified for daytime visibility (EN17353 standard)” and that it “lets the cyclist be visible when riding by day thanks to the fluorescent yellow”. The number changes elsewhere on the same page, which shows “EN 17053” in its feature list, as does the retailer’s catalogue. It is indeed EN 17353, published in 2020, that covers cycling: the testing laboratory SGS presents it as applying to medium-risk situations, such as cycling, running on roads where traffic is slow or working around slow-moving vehicles.

This standard distinguishes three types of equipment, SGS explains: type A, when the risk of not being seen exists only in full daylight, with fluorescent material alone; type B, for darkness, with retroreflective material alone; type AB, for day, dusk and night, which combines the two. Decathlon presents the 120 as a daytime visibility jacket.

One cycling rain jacket for the day, another for the night

For riding at night, Decathlon sells another BTWIN rain jacket, the Visibilité nuit 540, listed at €69.99 in its men’s version. The brand states that it “ensures your ventilation and your visibility at night” and announces waterproofing of 15,000 mm before washing and 5,000 mm after washing, against 5,000 mm for the 120.

The 120, for its part, does without vents: its product page states “no ventilation”.

A hood for the helmet, a pocket to stow it

Decathlon describes an adjustable, helmet-compatible hood, a main fabric in polyester with a polyurethane coating, and waterproof seams. The brand announces waterproofing of 5,000 mm H2O for this fabric, measured using the Schmerber method.

Once folded, the jacket packs into its chest pocket: Decathlon gives 26 × 25 × 5 cm in size L, small enough to slip into a bag on uncertain days.

Between the two jackets, the 40-euro difference pays, on paper, for the ventilation, night-time visibility and higher waterproofing before washing announced for the 540. The 120 sticks to the essentials: making you visible by day, in the rain, for under 30 euros.
