IN BRIEF
The Spiny 2, a removable assist kit, is running a Kickstarter campaign. The unit attaches to the bike and drives the tyre: its campaign announces 250 W rated power (750 W peak), 35 Nm, assistance up to 25 km/h, a 266 Wh battery and up to 90 km of range, for 2.2 kg. Its main selling point: it comes off in a few seconds when parking, so its owner can take it along. This is a crowdfunding project.

Turning your own bike into an e-bike, then returning it to its original state in a few seconds: that is the promise of the Spiny 2, whose crowdfunding campaign is live on Kickstarter. The campaign’s title talks of three seconds to go from bike to e-bike.
The Spiny 2 kit drives the tyre directly
The unit attaches to the frame and works in contact with the tyre. The brand says it is compatible with most standard bike frames, from road bikes to city, touring or hybrid bikes, and refers to its campaign FAQ for disc brakes and tyre widths. According to the campaign, sensors detect the rider’s effort in real time and automatically engage or disengage the motor from the tyre, to avoid any resistance when it is not assisting. The brand highlights a patented grip surface, said to keep contact with the tyre in rain, mud or snow.
On the numbers, the campaign announces assistance up to 25 km/h, 750 W peak for 250 W rated power and 35 Nm of torque. The 266 Wh battery fully recharges in 4 hours and is rated for more than 800 cycles, with up to 90 km of range and five assistance modes.

An anti-theft argument
At 2.2 kg, the Spiny 2 is designed to be carried: the campaign suggests detaching it in a few seconds when parking and keeping it with you. As this is a crowdfunding project, its performance figures remain those claimed by the brand.
