IN BRIEF

On 21 October, Halfords published its trading update for the 26 weeks ended 2 October 2026. Its cycling sales rose 8.3% on a like-for-like basis, after +9% over the same period a year earlier. The retailer highlights sales of seasonal categories during a warm summer. Its retail sales rose 7.7% like-for-like, and detailed results are expected next month.

Bikes keep selling well at Halfords. The chain, which also sells motoring products and services, is reporting higher figures for its half-year.

Halfords cycling sales up 8.3%

Over the 26 weeks ended 2 October 2026, Halfords’ cycling sales rose 8.3% on a like-for-like basis, reports Cycling Industry News, which relays the group’s statement. A year earlier, over the 26 weeks ended 26 September 2025, they had already grown 9%.

Cycling Industry News reports that the group’s retail sales rose 7.7% like-for-like, with +7.3% for motoring. The Autocentres garages also posted growth, of 6.1%.

The warm summer and e-bikes

Halfords attributes this growth to demand for seasonal categories over the summer and to its wider strategy, road.cc reports: sharper pricing, the expansion of its motoring services and, above all, a focus on e-bikes and their higher margins. Chief executive Henry Birch summed it up as follows:

“The business continued to perform positively through the first half as we benefited from good execution against our strategic priorities and strong sales of seasonal categories through the warm summer weather. We move into the second half with confidence and look forward to sharing more detail on our progress at our interim results announcement later next month.”

The group’s interim results are therefore expected in November. road.cc also notes that Halfords is maintaining its forecast of an underlying profit before tax of £55 million to £65 million for the current financial year, and that its shares nonetheless fell by as much as ten per cent, as investors worried about a sharp slowdown in consumer spending heading into winter.
