IN BRIEF
The Cotentin region is launching France’s first longtail cargo bike shared from a secure docking station. Developed with Ecovelo and Douze Cycles, the model carries passengers and loads with ease. Rechargeable and hard-wearing, it is built for the everyday needs of families. The project marks a step towards a more utilitarian kind of bike sharing.

An innovative service in Cherbourg
The Communauté d’agglomération du Cotentin, the local authority for the Cherbourg area, is now offering a novel active-travel service: the very first longtail cargo bike available for public hire, in Cherbourg. The model has been developed with operator Ecovelo and manufacturer Douze Cycles, and slots into the stations of the Cap Cotentin network.
The longtail cargo bike can carry a child, a passenger or the shopping, positioning shared cycling as a credible alternative to the car. Recharged at the station, it answers growing demand for transport options suited to families and everyday errands.
Meeting everyday needs
Designed as an answer for those who lack the space or the budget to buy a bike of their own, this new type of shared bike handles everyday journeys such as taking a child to school or doing the shopping. With a sturdy frame and suitable passenger equipment, these bikes respond to what residents were already doing, adapting whatever they had to travel two-up.
The move follows a trend seen in other major European cities, where cargo bikes are gaining ground both with private users and with companies offering long-term rental.

A technical and infrastructure challenge
Fitting a longtail cargo bike into an automated docking system calls for specific adaptations, particularly around security and infrastructure. The Cotentin stands out as the first region to offer this type of bike for public hire, with equipment designed to withstand intensive use.
The scheme also fits into the wider push by public policy for secure infrastructure and better links with public transport, so that cycling becomes a genuine everyday mobility option.
